IPC decides to return property to a British Cypriot

Property

OVERVIEW

Ayfer Said Erkmen told Yenidüzen that the Immovable Property Commission (IPC) has decided to return two of five immovable properties to British Cypriot Andriani Joannou in Kumyalı (Koma tou gialou). He added that the applicant also received nearly 250,000 GBP in compensation for the remaining three immovable properties. Joannou had applied to the IPC eight years ago while the decision was made about a month-and-a-half ago.

Erkmen said that the IPC had checked with all the relevant authorities whether there would be any objections to the return of the property before taking the decision.

There have been 6,538 applications to the IPC as of 19 April 2019, from which 964 have been resolved with the Commission paying out 302,145,102 GBP in compensation.

Yenidüzen also published comments made by Andriani Joannou’s lawyer Achilleas Demetriades to the Cyprus News Agency. The lawyer highlighted the importance of the decision to return the immovable properties, though he noted that the compensation amount was much lower than expected. Demetriades added his client will consider possible future steps to take.

More developed north means stronger Turkish Cypriot side in the talks

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

The leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) Ersin Tatar said a more developed north would mean a stronger Turkish Cypriot side in the talks.

Tatar, addressing party members in Kaymaklı (Kaimakli) on Friday urged all investors in the country to channel their efforts towards the development of the country.

He underlined that the Turkish Cypriots now have a state of their own. The Greek Cypriot side still sees the Turkish Cypriots as a minority and does not intend to establish a partnership with the Turkish Cypriots based on political equality, Tatar added.

The UBP leader said that the UN has failed to provide a realistic picture of the situation despite the fact the Greek Cypriot side repeatedly rejects political equality.

Tatar concluded that the Turkish Cypriot community is currently debating, as solution models, two states under an EU umbrella, confederation, or two separate states as possible alternatives, even though the UN could not publicly announce the real reasons for the current stalemate on the island.
