Once the issue was reported by the Turkish media claims were made that these students had to sit equivalency tests and would require the approval of a commission. A delegation from YÖDAK (TC Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council) hastily took off to Ankara, later announcing that it had settled the matter. Discussions and reactions on UNSG’s report continue

OVERVIEW

President Mustafa Akıncı and the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy Jane Holl Lute discussed over the phone on Thursday the report presented to the UN Security Council as well as possible future developments, a statement from Akıncı’s office announced.

Akıncı was also informed by Lute on her latest contacts with all parties concerned in the Cyprus Issue.

The opposition National Unity Party (UBP) criticized the report with a statement issued on Friday.

The UBP’s Famagusta MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu said that it was wrong for the UN to continue to leave Cyprus in a state of uncertainty.

He said that the report refrained from asserting blame or criticizing either side.

Instead, it left the door open for open-ended shuttle diplomacy, Hasipoğlu said.

He reminded that the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had clearly stated in his report in 2004 that Greek Cypriots were not ready to share power or wealth with Turkish Cypriots.

Hasipoğlu questioned whether it was normal for the UN not to make the observation that nothing has changed in the Greek Cypriot side’s mentality in the past 15 years.

The UBP MP said that the UN refrained from openly stating that a common vision did not exist despite the fact that all attempts, including the latest ones, had failed.

Hasipoğlu said it was not possible to discuss alternative solution models until the UN agrees that this model has been exhausted.

He added that Akıncı, who shared the UN’s views, only served to please the Greek Cypriots which have been backtracking on past convergences.

‘The only positive mention in the report is that both communities had rights and interests over the natural resources discovered around the island,’ Hasipoğlu said. He concluded by saying there was no solution on the horizon in the foreseeable future, as stated in the UN report.

OVERVIEW

Turkey was angered by NATO on Friday for inviting South Cyprus to the SACEUR (Supreme Allied Commander Europe) handover ceremony, the two papers reported.

A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that the invitation extended to South Cyprus, which did not have any status within NATO, to attend the SACEUR handover ceremony was a huge blunder on NATO’s part.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the alliance and stated that Turkey protested the ceremony which took place in Belgium.
