UNSG wants ToR agreement from trilateral meeting

Phileleftheros
Negotiations Process, Regional/International Relations

OVERVIEW

According to Phileleftheros, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wants the two leaders to reach an agreement on the Terms of Reference (ToR) during their joint meeting at the end of next month so that it can be presented to the three guarantors for approval at an informal five-party meeting.

The daily reports that a month before the expected meeting between Guterres and the two leaders, what is made clear is Guterres’ determination to see results from that meeting.

It is expected that he will attempt to see a minimum agreement on the ToR during the trilateral meeting which might take place in Berlin since Guterres will be there at the end of November for an international conference.

In the case Guterres presents the ToR agreement to the guarantors, it is expected that Greece and the UK will not raise any objections but the question is raised as regards Turkey’s intentions and whether Turkey will agree to the ToR as is or lead the process to a deadlock, the paper reported.

Phileleftheros further reports that the report requested by the Security Council on the UNSG’s Good Offices Mission in Cyprus currently being prepared, is not expected to take into consideration the November meeting and the five-party one expected to take place in December

OVERVIEW

According to the paper 79-year-old Nikolas Skourides has permanently moved back to Larnakas tis Lapithou, after building a new house in his property returned to him by the Immovable Property Commission (IPC).

The daily, citing an article by Reporter news portal, reported that Skourides moved in around a month and a half ago and that his children and grandchildren visit during weekends. He said he has had no problems with the TCs who, on the contrary, welcomed him and helped him to settle in.

In response to reactions claiming he should not have returned to his village under TC administration as this would be a form of recognition of the pseudo-state, Skourides called on everyone do the same if they dared and fulfil their dream of returning to their villages. If everyone did the same there would be more GCs in the occupied areas, he said, according to Alithia.

OVERVIEW

More than 200 GCs and TCs from Pelathousa in Polis Chrysochous met at their village on Saturday during an event aimed at bringing refugees from both sides together, the dailies report.

The event was organised by the Pelathousa community council and director Panikos Chrysanthous’ organisation Kypriaki Tainiothiki.

More than half of the attendees were TC refugees from Pelathousa. The GCs living in Pelathousa come mainly from Karpasia and Morphou which is where most of the TC refugees from Pelathousa now live. Many TCs spent the night in the area so that they could participate on Sunday in a guided visit in Melandra where a photo exhibition took place.

The event’s organisers said they are happy to see more and more persons participating each year.

Pelathousa community leader Andreas Savva said the event aimed at opening a communication line between GCs and TCs and contribute to the reunification of the island and help envision a reunified Cyprus.

He said 450 TCs and GCs were living in the village until 1975 but after 1976 when the TCs left, Pelathousa was left with only 65 residents.
