The president himself is undermining unity

While the government and DISY exhort AKEL with baseless accusations and toxicity, it is them who, with their actions and words undermine unity. “Unfortunately Mr Anastasiades has overstepped the  limits,” said AKEL general secretary Andros Kyprianou in response to Anastasiades’ advise to AKEL to “finally realise that it is talking on behalf of the GCs.”

Anastasiades: Trilateral’s success will depend on TCs

OVERVIEW

According to the dailies, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Sunday that the basic conditions that could formulate the Terms of Reference (ToR) have been set and that UN special envoy Jane Holl Lute visit Cyprus prior to the trilateral meeting.

Anastasiades, commenting on the ToR , said that any attempt to impose or address in advance issues that need to be discussed at the negotiating table “would be an unthinkable attempt or political act, either from our side, or from the TC side.”

He said also that expectations should be viewed as hopeful but that there must be some reservation since this will depend on the TC side and Ankara’s intervention.

Phileleftheros reported that it is obvious Nicosia keeps low expectations but does not want to send out the message there will be no results.

According to Phileleftheros it all points out that Turkey is not willing to lead things to a final procedure on the Cyprus problem predetermining that there can be no substantial development. On the other hand, there is risk of Nicosia being trapped in a process doomed to reach a dead end and possibly new negative faits accomplis.

Haravgi and Alithia on the other hand report that Anastasiades appears to be reservedly optimistic.

Government-AKEL spat over Cyprob

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

The dailies report on a new, heated spat between President Nicos Anastasiades and ruling DISY and AKEL on the Cyprus problem.

According to the papers it all started after Anastasiades, following criticism by AKEL called on the main opposition party to remember it was representing also the GCs.

This caused the ire of AKEL’s leader Andros Kyprianou who said in response that Anastasiades had overstepped the limits.

Kyprianou said Anastasiades says one thing in public and another in private meetings. He also said that AKEL never said it was defending Turkish positions rather it was the president’s stance that encourages Turkey to escalate her provocations.

Ruling DISY leader Averof Neophytou, in support of Anastasiades said that the daily creation by AKEL of a toxic environment was not helping the country especially ahead of such crucial meetings on the Cyprus problem.

He added that Anastasiades has said dozens of times  he was more than ready to return to the negotiations table.

In his turn, AKEL spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said it was Anastasiades who was creating a toxic environment.
