Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

The leader of the United Cyprus Party (BKP) İzzet İzcan expressed the hope that the tripartite meeting in Berlin on November 25 will pave the way for an unofficial five-party meeting.

“Permanent division will spell the end of the Turkish Cypriot community, İzcan said in a written statement issued on Monday.

He called on all pro-solution forces to take determined steps in support of a solution.

He said that it was vital to act based on UN resolutions and past convergences as well as reach an agreement on the terms of reference.

“Sabotaging the process by delaying the process will not benefit anyone,” he added.

İzcan pointed out that supporters of the status quo had launched a vigorous attack to prevent President Mustafa from engaging in negotiations with the Greek Cypriot side.

“They are trying to deal a blow to the people’s will by creating a debate on Akıncı’s legitimacy. This is an ugly game they’re playing. The real intention is to prevent a federal solution to the Cyprus Problem,” he added.

İzcan also said that the Justice and Development (AKP) government in Turkey was waging an attack on Akıncı and these attacks were encouraging circles, particularly the National Unity Party (UBP)-Peoples’ Party (HP) coalition, which was opposed to a solution.
