“Road fatalities more than double the EU average”

Turkish Cypriot traffic engineer Taner Aksu who has been working in the US for over 40 years said that all an individual responsible for the deaths of four people because he/she was texting behind the wheel received was four years in prison. “Is that the value of four lives? You would be imprisoned for a hundred years in the US for committing the same act. The public blames the judges but it’s not their fault. They are giving the maximum sentence the laws permit. Laws are made by parliament and parliament is elected by the people,” Aksu said.

We don’t know how to live an apartment life in the TRNC

Living in an apartment building requires a culture of living together but serious problems are being experienced in our country on this issue. Laws and regulations are stating what homeowners and tenants are required to do but this isn’t very effective.

The end of the tunnel is dark

A new risk is on the horizon for the TRNC which is going through rapid social transformation. The Greek Cypriot administration is altering the Green Line regulation in an attempt to curb the influx of migrants from North to South. Should the regulation be changed, hundreds of migrants will remain in the TRNC.

Rate of early deaths is frightening

Six people between the ages of 41 and 51 have died in the past eight days either at home or whilst walking on the street. Cardiologist Dr Erkut Aşcıoğlu told Diyalog that the causes of such sudden deaths were hypertension, diabetes, unhealthy diet, smoking and stress. He said that high consumption of fast food, frequent dining at restaurants or eating take-out instead of home-cooked meals combined with smoking and stress was a recipe for heart disease.

  • On the EU’s agenda – It’s been claimed that it will be possible to export Hellim/Halloumi produced in the TRNC to anywhere in the world if a certificate of approval is obtained from the South.
  • The area wants tighter controls –The Arasta shopping area came to life after hundreds of tourists crossed over to the north through the Lokmacı (Ledra) crossing point.

Taçoy was speaking at a meeting on Saturday with members of the Ankara Chamber of Commerce.

He said that the Greek Cypriot side was doing all it could to prevent the Direct Trade Regulation prepared by the European Union from coming to life.

“More importantly the Greek Cypriots have no tolerance towards the Green Line regulation which is not functioning smoothly. They’re trying to curtail the regulation by making up different excuses,” he said.

Taçoy added that Turkish Cypriots will continue to develop economically despite international embargoes through the support and assistance provided by Turkey.
