Table top exercise with two scenarios and a budget

Despite that the climate has been defused as regards strike measures by teachers. Purchase of services by parents and unemployed teachers with a €60,000 to €70,000 cost. Two-hour class abstention tomorrow by pupils and escalation of measures.

The next step is up in the air

Goals have been set but it remains unknown what comes after the Berlin meeting. Nicosia is ready also for a five-party meeting. AKEL’s demands to Anastasiades.

  • Serious threat due to Turkey (speech by DISY leader during a conference in Paris)
  • The rehousing left behind a wretched situation in a refugee estate

Haravgi

We express the concern of the country and the people

The only way to save our country and create the prospect for a future is an honest compromise as provided in the agreed framework, AKEL said. It calls on the president, ahead of the November 25 meeting, “to work hard for the restart of substantive dialogue that would lead to the solution based on the agreed framework.”

  • It was not Kyrenia’s sea that brought them here (anti-occupation rally by Kyrenia refugees)
  • The conservation of Archangelos Michail church starts with funding from Yialousa refugees

Exams or anomaly?

The teachers, with today’s referendum, are holding in their hands the fate of their pupils but also of education. If ‘No’ prevails, it will mean failure and disapproval of AKEL’s efforts for new turbulence in education. (Student body) PSEM announced abstention from classes for tomorrow and threatens with more drastic reactions also in December.

  • Will the five-party meeting shipwreck? – The government cites information on Turkey’s reluctance. Ankara seems to not want developments until the ‘presidential elections’ in the occupied areas.
  • Archangelos Michail church: Yialousa refugees pay for the restoration

Turkey does not want developments on Cyprob until after elections in north

OVERVIEW

The dailies report that the five-party meeting that was to take place in December after the trilateral meeting in Berlin between the two leaders and the UN Secretary-General will not take place in December after all, due to Turkey’s reluctance.

The papers cite a government source that told the Cyprus News Agency that Turkey does not seem willing to attend a five-party meeting in December. Turkey would prefer developments on the Cyprus problem after the ‘elections’ in the north that are to take place in April, the source said.

Ankara conveyed this position in diplomatic contacts with third countries while Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu mentioned the same last week during a meeting with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias in Geneva, the papers reported.

The initial goal for an informal five-party meeting, between the two leaders and guarantor powers Turkey, Greece and the UK, “ is obviously not happening, because Turkey will not attend,” the source told CNA, adding that therefore, the five-party meeting would not take place in December but rather postponed for later.

The dailies also report that the spat between AKEL and the government on the trilateral meeting continued on Sunday with AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou calling on President Nicos Anastasiades to work hard for a substantive dialogue to restart based on the agreed framework.

He called on Anastasiades to utilise the progress former President Demetris Christofias has achieved at the talks for Cyprus’ benefit.

Kyprianou also said that Turkey has overstepped all limits with her provocative and aggressive behaviour.

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said in response that the November 25 meeting is taking place, to a great extent, due to Anastasiades and his stable and consistent principled stance but also the suggestions he submitted to the UNSG.

He reiterated that Anastasiades has been cooperating constructively with UN special envoy Jane Holl Lute and submitted a series of proposals to overcome the Turkish government’s undermining activity.

He asked AKEL if it really thinks that by criticising and accusing the GC side which is suffering from the Turkish occupation and Turkey’s new attacks is contributing to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Yialousa refugees fund restoration works on medieval church

OVERVIEW

The dailies report that the contracts have been signed for the restoration of the 12th century church of Archangelos Michail in Yialousa.

The restoration will be carried out by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage on behalf of refugees from Yialousa, living in Cyprus and abroad who are funding the project.

The GC head of the Committee, Takis Hadjidemetriou, said the church dates back to 12th century and is a monument of great importance for Yialousa and orthodoxy in general.

He said the restoration project will be carried out solely with funds raised by Yialousa refugees. The church was expanded during the 18th century by Archbishop Chrysanthos, and it needs urgent intervention because the building has cracks that need to be dealt with to save the church, he said.

Hadjidemetriou also said there is a long list of self-funded projects to be carried out, while in some cases, projects will be co-funded as the Committee will also contribute financially.

He also said that restoration works started on the 13th or 14th-century church of the Saints Sergios and Vakhos in Ayios Sergios in occupied Famagusta with EU funding.
