OVERVIEW

The dailies report that the trilateral meeting in Berlin next week between the two leaders and the UN Secretary-General will have an open agenda.

No statements were made by the two leaders following their separate meetings with Un special envoy Jane Holl Lute the papers report.

Phileleftheros, citing sources, reports that the meeting was focused on a review of what took place so far and on procedural matters ahead of the trilateral.

The dailies report that Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said after the meeting of  Anastasiades with the Lute that the president had a good discussion with the UN envoy ahead of the Berlin trilateral.

He refrained from elaborating arguing it would not be useful right to say anything else ahead of the meeting in Berlin.

Citing information given by a source to the Cyprus News Agency, the informal meeting in Berlin will have an open agenda and the two leaders will have the opportunity to discuss with Guterres about the next steps.

According to the same source, Anastasiades conveyed to Lute the position of the GC side that there is ground for an agreement on the Terms of Reference and therefore this is something attainable.

He also told Lute that the GC side wants an informal five-party meeting involving the two sides and the three guarantor powers to take place just after the trilateral, the source said, according to the dailies.

Alithia, citing information, reports that Lute, during brief meetings with the two leaders without the presence of their associates, probed the possibility of them making any concessions on crucial issues and how they feel about possible alternative solutions she presented to them.

Citing diplomatic sources, the daily also reported that Guterres will this time ask the two sides’ final positions so that he can set his next steps which will be either an announcement on an agreement on the ToR and a five-party meeting or the end of the current process, call Lute back and brief the Security Council on who’s to blame on the new shipwreck.

OVERVIEW

The dailies report that the burning by far-right ELAM followers of a ‘flag’ stirred reactions in the north and that TC leader Mustafa Akinci, politicians in the north but also the Turkish foreign ministry called for explanations over the incident.

Phileleftheros reports that the occupied areas and Turkey found an excuse just a week prior to the trilateral to use an insignificant incident and raise tensions.

The daily reported that ELAM, on the other hand, tried to take credit for this act arguing that the occupation authorities made another honorary reference to them by calling for measures against members of the party “for burning that rag” as ELAM said, during the rally against the establishment of the pseudo-state.

Haravgi too reports that the Turkish foreign ministry is trying to take advantage of the burning of the ‘flag’.
