TRNC’s agenda focuses on elections once again

It’s neither Soleimani’s death nor the EastMed project or the motion to send troops to Libya. While the Middle East is experiencing its biggest crisis in decades, tensions continue to rise following the signing of the EastMed pipeline agreement between South Cyprus, Israel and Greece. Turkey on the other hand which recently signed agreements with Libya on maritime boundaries and military cooperation approved a motion to send troops to the North African country. While all these developments unfold around us, politicians in the TRNC are focusing all their time and energy on the presidential elections set to take place in April.

Çağıner warns TC tourism too dependent on Larnaca airport

OVERVIEW

The head of the Turkish Cypriot Hoteliers’ Association Dimağ Çağıner said that a 40 per cent increase was recorded in the number of tourists destined for the north arriving through Larnaca airport compared to the previous year.

He, however, warned that the Turkish Cypriot tourism sector was too dependent on arrivals from Larnaca Airport.

In an interview with Yenidüzen published on Sunday, Çağıner said that their Greek Cypriot neighbours were not happy with the increase in the number of tourists flying in through Larnaca airport before crossing over to holiday in the north.

“It’s both pleasing and concerning as we compete with the Greek Cypriot side. Our growing dependency on Larnaca airport is a source of concern,” he added.

Çağıner warned that the minute the Greek Cypriot side decided to bar tourists from crossing over to the north would spell disaster for the Turkish Cypriot tourism industry.

“This is why we needed to urgently come up with projects and a way to fly in tourists to Ercan (Tymbou) directly. The Greek Cypriots control the tap. The minute they decide to cut off the water supply we will be trapped and doomed,” he warned.

Failure to protect monuments that resisted time

Human Rights

OVERVIEW

“The biggest issue is sustainable maintenance of historical monuments,” co-chair of the bicommunal technical committee on cultural heritage Ali Tuncay said in his statement to Kıbrıs Postası.

Tuncay added that the lack of funds and human resources hinder the maintenance work of monuments of cultural importance.

“These two elements – funds and personnel are needed to ensure sustainable maintenance,” Tuncay stressed.

Tuncay noted that the European Union (EU) provides €2m annually for the restoration of the historical monuments but it is not enough because there is so much more to be done to protect the monuments.
