Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Leader of the opposition People’s Party (HP) Kudret Özersay on Sunday urged Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar to focus on and prepare for various confidence-building measures (CBMs) including the reopening of the crossing points before the Geneva summit.

In a social media post on Sunday, Özersay argued the moment the international actors realise that there is no common ground for a mutually acceptable solution; they will likely put forth CBMs on various issues to launch the new process.

“I believe the international actors will make some kind of an effort to conceal the continuation of the status quo even if it is to the detriment of the Turkish Cypriot community,” Özersay said, urging Tatar and his team to start focusing and preparing for CBMs.

Özersay also speculated that the Greek Cypriot side will have to explain the reasons as to why it insists on a federation model after so many years whereas the Turkish Cypriots will need to explain why the Greek Cypriot side should accept a two-state solution on the island.

“It is not realistic to expect the two sides to reach a common ground to launch the negotiations process in Geneva,” he said, arguing that the UN at the end of the meeting will try to sugarcoat the situation by saying that the sides have agreed to continue discussing CBMs and various collaboration mechanisms.

Özersay also noted the way forward for Cyprus will also depend on Turkey’s relations with the US and with the EU. The HP leader also urged Tatar to brief the parliament in a closed session.

Tatar: TCs have a right to sovereignty

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on Sunday said that the Erenköy (Kokkina) resistance gave the message to the international community that there are two peoples in Cyprus and that Turkish Cypriots have a right to sovereignty.

Tatar was speaking during a visit to Erenköy (Kokkina) where he attended a tree planting event to mark the island’s conquest by the Ottomans in 1571. The Turkish Cypriot leader who was accompanied by Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ersan Saner travelled to the Turkish Cyriot enclave via boat.

He likened the struggle waged by those who defended Erenköy (Kokkina) was the same struggle being waged at the negotiating table. Tatar argued that Turkish Cypriots’ struggle to exist in Cyprus continues and that they were moving forward today under the roof of their sovereign state.

“If there is to be a solution in Cyprus, it must be based on sovereign equality between two states that co-exist side by side,” he said, adding Ankara fully backed the Turkish Cypriot side.
