Akar: Turkey not in favour of hiking up tension

Alithia, Haravgi, Phileleftheros
Regional/International Relations

OVERVIEW

The dailies report on statements issued by the Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar, who in reference to regional developments said Turkey is not in favour of hiking up tension.

Akar said that despite the “constructive, positive, peaceful and clear stance” held by Turkey in favour of talks, Greece continues to build up tension.

Phileleftheros reports that problems being faced by Turkey within and beyond its borders are contributing to increasing regional tension on the part of Ankara. The paper reports that hours before the visit to Turkey by top EU officials Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen, who are set to discuss EU-Turkey relations as well as the Cyprus problem, the Turkish government is mounting provocations through actions and statements involving the Aegean.

Phileleftheros reports that in addition to the economic issues weighing Turkey down, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is now also facing a situation involving a number of retired admirals who expressed concern over certain plans which would open up for debate the 1936 Montreux Convention, that guarantees the free passage through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits of civilian vessels in times of both peace and war.
