CTP: “We will not attend the meeting which is only being held for show”

The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) said that the briefing to be given by President Ersin Tatar in parliament on May 10 will only be for show and that they will not be attending. It said that the meeting being organised long after political parties were kept in the dark had lost its meaning.

CTP will not attend Tatar’s debriefing on the Geneva talks

OVERVIEW

The main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) on Saturday announced its MPs will not attend Monday’s special session of parliament during which Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar will brief deputies on the Geneva talks.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the CTP argued the briefing will only be for show. “The debriefing meeting on the Geneva talks is meaningless as Tatar went ahead with his policies without consulting anyone,” the CTP statement read.

Even though CTP leader Tufan Erhürman and the party’s foreign affairs secretary were present in Geneva, the CTP delegation along with the representatives of the other Turkish Cypriot political parties were not consulted or informed about any of the developments that they were forced to learn about what was going on through the media.

“The political party representatives had questioned Tatar on the possible Turkish Cypriot proposals as reported by the media, but he refuted the claims, only to submit the proposal during the meeting the next day,” the statement read.

“We will not accept such disrespectful behaviour due to the responsibility we have for our community,” the statement concluded, reiterating that Tatar’s debriefing at the parliament is meaningless and is for show only.

In the meantime, Erhürman and Toros held a meeting on Saturday with Judith Garber, US Ambassador in Cyprus. The five-plus-one meeting held in Geneva and the situation that arose following Geneva were discussed during the meeting.

OVERVIEW

Faruk Kaymakçı, Turkey’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Director for EU Affairs said “Ankara does not want the Cyprus problem or the maximalist demands of a few countries to dictate Turkey’s relations with the bloc.”

Speaking to Turkish news agency Anatolia on the occasion of Europe Day, May 9, the deputy minister added that Ankara wants the continuation of positive relations with the EU. “Turkey wants to proceed to the positive agenda after the EU Summit in June 2021, if not earlier than that date,” Kaymakçı said, adding that the positive agenda must include all areas.

“We hope that the EU leadership wouldn’t sacrifice relations to the Cyprus issue, and maximalist and unreasonable demands of some countries,” Kaymakçı concluded.

In the meantime, Turkey’s Defence Minister Hulusi Akar on Saturday said that a two-state solution was the only viable solution model in Cyprus.

During a visit to the Special Forces Command together with the top brass of the military command, Akar said that there was a sovereign and independent Turkish state in Cyprus. “We wish for peaceful and good neighbourly relations based on dialogue,” he said.

Reiterating Ankara’s continued support for the Turkish Cypriot side, Akar also said there was no point in renegotiating solution models which have been tried and which have been unsuccessful.
