Anastasiades expecting Lute to outline next steps

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

President Nicos Anastasiades said on Sunday he expects to be informed by the UN Secretary General’s (UNSG) special envoy on Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute, what the UN are willing to do with a view to determining the framework and the common ground for talks on the Cyprus problem, the dailies report.

In statements to members of the press on Sunday and asked what he expects from his forthcoming meeting with Lute, Anastasiades said: “I expect to hear what the UN are willing to do, so that we go back to what is determined by the UN resolutions, so that we can then determine the framework and the common ground, which however must be based on international law and the UNSG’s mandate.”

Asked if it is possible for a five-party meeting on Cyprus to take place, given the violations by Turkey in Varosha, Anastasiades said that this will become clear by the positions and the actions of the Turkish and the TC side.

The GC side’s position, he stressed, “is that we are determined, on the basis of what has been agreed, on the basis of the UN resolutions and always within the UNSG’s mandate, to proceed to a fruitful dialogue, so that we can live together peacefully, with political equality and respect for human rights.”

Phileleftheros reports that Anastasiades also said that what the GC side is seeking is to free Cyprus of all occupation forces, guarantees, and dependencies on third parties. Anastasiades also said that the GC side went to negotiations determined to claim that political equality cannot become political inequality. He said “we respect and accept that there must be mutual respect, but mutual respect cannot only come from one side but must come from both sides.”

Phileleftheros reports that Anastasiades added that the Cypriot people have lived peacefully for centuries and continue to co-create, as long as they are left alone, independent, and sovereign. He said the state that is being sought is one that respects EU values and principles, human rights, and above all the principles of democracy. Anastasiades stressed that any other options, such as the ones tabled by the Turkish and TC side, not only find the GC side in disagreement but it is also impossible for such options to lead to a solution in line with international law, the EU acquis, and the values that the GC side believes in. With these guiding principles in mind, Anastasiades said, he will work toward securing the solution being sought by Cypriot Hellenism and beyond.

Phileleftheros and Haravgi report that in statements on Sunday, AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou said that the Cyprus problem is at an extremely “difficult and dangerous” stage, and called on the GC side to think about its next moves and to clarify its goals and priorities. Kyprianou said however that Turkey has always been the main obstacle to a Cyprus solution due to its intransigent positions, which he said can only be changed if the GC side sticks to the agreed-upon solution framework and cooperates with our TC compatriots.
