Era of scarcity

A serious shortage of supplies is being experienced at public hospitals. While new hospital projects are being promoted to the public, reports of shortages of medicines, kits and other medical supplies at state hospitals are emerging. The Turkish Cypriot Doctors’ Association, the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Doctors, the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Dentists and the Turkish Cypriot Doctors’ Union drew attention to the problems experienced at the main state hospital in Nicosia.

Purchased electricity from the south but wasn’t enough. Power cuts continue

KIBTEK (Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority) which is now the epicentre of corruption allegations is now struggling to meet the growing electricity demand due to the heatwave. The public, suffering from the sweltering heat has turned to their air conditioning for relief but the result was a surge in consumption causing the power plant to break down. Backup generators that work on diesel fuel, which have not been maintained properly, also broke down.

  • Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu arrived in the TRNCÇavuşoğlu, who is on a working trip to our country, will meet with President Ersin Tatar and then the two will hold a joint press conference.

Rebirth Party (YDP) MP Bertan Zaroğlu made striking statements on Havadis web TV. He said the promises made during the forming of the coalition government are all forgotten.

It’s bound to happen

We’ve started purchasing electricity from the Greek Cypriot side after five of the eight power generators at the Teknecik power plant broke down. The remaining three generators are unable to keep up with the surge in consumption due to the heatwave. The Minister for Economy and Energy Erhan Arıklı said that they have been purchasing electricity from the south for more than a week.

Torture within the military proven

A life sentence verdict was given for the case of Uğur Kantar, who died after being given disciplinary punishment during his term on the island as a conscript. Kantar had been handcuffed and forced to sit under the scorching sun from July 16 to 25. He was also beaten up. Afterwards, Kantar was taken to a military hospital in Ankara for treatment for his injuries but could not be saved.

Çavuşoğlu arrives in the north for consultations with Tatar

OVERVIEW

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu flew to the north on Wednesday night for a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar. The two will be meeting on Thursday afternoon before holding a joint press conference.

The Turkish foreign minister tweeted shortly after his arrival, “In #TRNC for a working visit. Equal sovereignty & equal status are inherent rights of Turkish Cypriots. Will continue to defend these rights together.”

According to presidential sources, Çavuşoğlu and Tatar will be discussing the Turkish Cypriot leader’s latest meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Brussels and the UN’s proposals which include the appointment of a new special advisor on Cyprus. He is expected to depart from the island on Thursday evening.


7,000 doses of J&J vaccine delivered to the north

7,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccines were handed over to the Turkish Cypriot health officials at the Metehan (Agios Dhometios) crossing point on Wednesday.

The delivery was arranged through the bicommunal technical committee on health.

Turkish Cypriot co-chair of the committee, Cenk Soydan said the north received so far 24,700 AstraZeneca vaccine doses and 10,350 Pfizer-BioNTech and 28,000 Johnson and Johnson vaccines with the delivery on Wednesday.

He added the total number of vaccines sent by the EU for the Turkish Cypriot community reached 63,050. Soydan also said the north has received 340,000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine from Turkey to date.


Marching on the anniversary of Kutlu Adalı’s assassination

“This Country is Ours” Platform will organize a march on July 6 to mark the anniversary of Kutlu Adalı’s assassination as well as to put pressure on the Turkish Cypriot police and other officials to launch an investigation given the recent evidence which surfaced on the perpetrators.

In a written statement issued on Wednesday, the Platform also noted that BASIN-SEN (Turkish Cypriot Press workers’ union), Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and Left Movement separately, have decided to cancel their own event to be held for the same purpose and to join the platform on July 6.


Four out of the eight irregular migrants arrested

OVERVIEW

Police discovered four irregular migrants in Famagusta on Tuesday evening. The police during questioning the four Syrian migrants – one woman and three men – found out that they had entered the north through an illegal entry point as part of a group of eight.

The police are now searching for the other four migrants while the detained were taken to a quarantine facility following carrying out their PCR tests at the Famagusta hospital.

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on Wednesday said Turkish Cypriot athletes have become successful at international competitions despite the unfair embargoes and limitations imposed.

Speaking during a meeting with the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot Football Coaches Associations, Tatar added that the Turkish Cypriot leadership “is doing its best to overcome the political obstacles to open the way forward for the Turkish Cypriot youth.”
