OVERVIEW

UN Special Representative and head of UNFICYP Elizabeth Spehar said she still has hope there will be a solution to the Cyprus problem after her farewell meeting with President Nicos Anastasiadis on Friday, the dailies report.

Spehar will be leaving her post, which she held for a period of five years, at the end of September. Spehar thanked Anastasiades for his cooperation. She will also have a farewell meeting with TC leader Ersin Tatar on Monday.

After the meeting, Spehar said Cypriots want a better future for this island, adding that it is very important to get more people involved in the peace process.

She also said that the UN Secretary General (UNSG) would continue his efforts to achieve a solution and hoped the Cypriots would do the same. Spehar thanked everyone that has worked with her, noting that she will always have a soft spot in her heart for Cypriots.

Haravgi reports that on its part, the presidency did not issue an announcement about the meeting nor did it express its thanks to Spehar.

The dailies report that Australian national Melissa Parke will be the next head of UNFICYP, though Cyprus Mail notes that announcements are not expected until later in September.
