OVERVIEW

Diplomatic sources have confirmed to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that Nicosia has given its consent for the appointment of Canadian Colin Stewart as the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (UNSG) in Cyprus, the papers report.

The dailies report that the Cypriot government has officially been approached and has given its consent for Stewart’s appointment, who will replace the UNSG’s current Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar.

Alithia reports that Spehar’s efforts did not yield the desired outcome and she is therefore leaving Cyprus with an unfulfilled goal, as had her predecessors.

Meanwhile, Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos said President Nicos Anastasiades will on Monday inform members of the National Council about developments in the Cyprus problem, following his meetings in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Anastasiades is also expected to brief the members of the Council on what was discussed and agreed regarding the appointment of a UN envoy for the Cyprus issue.

Phileleftheros and Haravgi also report that Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides was in Athens on Monday for contacts with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias. The two are set to discuss Cyprob developments and relations between Greece and Turkey, among other things.
