AKEL calls for the utilisation of its Cyprob proposal

Haravgi, Phileleftheros
Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

AKEL leader Stefanos Stefanou said the pessimistic and difficult situation in which the Cyprus problem is currently in requires that the GC side do everything it can to push the situation towards a solution, including a discussion of the proposal issued by AKEL last December.

The dailies report that Stefanou was speaking from the church of Saint George Exorinos in Varosha on Sunday, where he attended a liturgy. Stefanou said that Turkey, taking advantage of the impasse, is creating new and serious faits accomplis in its pursuit of a two-state solution. He added that the gradual reopening of Varosha is an expression of how critical the situation has become, which should raise the alarm bell for us all.

He said his presence at the liturgy serves to send the message that we cannot forget our occupied areas, and this is why AKEL is continuing the struggle for a solution to the Cyprus problem, which would liberate and reunify the people and their land.

Stefanou also said that we know that we are at a pessimistic and difficult period, which is exacerbated by the drawn-out impasse, the lack of negotiations, and Turkey’s provocative, unacceptable, and intransigent position on the Cyprus problem. He said however that we do not have the right to embrace this pessimism and to abandon hope for a solution.

He said that the GC side must do everything it can to push the situation towards a solution, noting that we cannot expect things from others if we do not first take specific initiatives of our own. Towards this end, he said, AKEL had given President Nicos Anastasiades a specific proposal last December, and called on Anastasiades to finally agree to discuss it to see if there are any grounds of agreement, which could in the end help push things forward.
