FM discusses Cyprob, options paper with EEAS SG

Phileleftheros
EU Matters

OVERVIEW

Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides met in Brussels with Stefano Sannino, the Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and shared an in-depth discussion on Turkey’s illegal actions in Cyprus and the need for the EU to act decisively on the basis of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) decisions regarding Varosha, Phileleftheros reports.

The daily writes that Christodoulides was in Brussels to participate in the General Affairs Council. Citing information, during their meeting, Christodoulides and Sannino also discussed what would be included in the options paper being drafted involving possible actions against Turkey, as well as when it is expected to be put up for discussion among the the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) and a general timeframe for when developments can be expected.

Phileleftheros reports citing information that the options paper will be tabled before COREPER in two parts. The first will describe the situation as it stands today, on the basis of a relevant EU report, and the second part will outline the options the EU has to respond to Turkey’s actions.

The paper reports that Nicosia’s efforts to see measures being approved is considered particularly difficult given the views being expressed by powerful EU member states, such as Germany, Spain and Italy.

Phileleftheros reports that the document describes the situation in the north, including facts such as the construction and maintenance of buildings, but also aspects such as military activity in Famagusta, the Varosha port, the Lefkoniko airport, and the recent decision to grant 140,000 square metres of land in Karpasia to the Turkish military. The report also details the way in which Turkey is operating in the north, such as the way in which the TC side is guided by the Turkish embassy in the north, as well as the way in which plans for Varosha are the result of coordination between TC politicians, high-level military and legal representatives and Turkish diplomats in the north.

The paper writes that the EU document accepts that Turkey’s goal is to destabilise Nicosia’s policies, in an attempt to create tension between Cyprus and the EU so that it can impose its own terms in the resolution of the Cyprus problem. The document also views the TC side’s call to GCs to reclaim their properties in Varosha as a move aiming to cause division among GCs.

Akinci says north being transformed into Turkish province

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Former TC leader Mustafa Akinci said the north is steadily being transformed into a Turkish province, with the annexation policy just not made official yet, the dailies report.

Akinci said in an interview that that Turkey’s ruling AKP party has been following a different policy in the Cyprus problem since Crans-Montana, but said he doesn’t rule out that these were always Turkeys goals even before 2017, though after that round of negotiations these policies became much clearer.

He said that currently, there is a pervasive insistence on the policy of a non-solution and the maintenance of the status quo, while there is also an attempt to impose Turkey’s views, adding that there are some political parties in the north who are happy with this and are willing to collaborate with these views.

Akinci said that those in the north with views in favour of democracy and secularism have been completely sidelined, with views in favour of the status quo and the gradual transition of the north into a Turkish province reigning supreme.
