House President: We do not compromise with the occupation, division

Phileleftheros
Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

House President Annita Demetriou said that despite Turkey’ relentless stance on the Cyprus problem, we continue our efforts and boldly declare that we do not compromise with either the occupation or the division of our country, Phileleftheros reports.

Speaking at a memorial held on Sunday for the fallen residents of the community of Trachonas and those who went missing, Demetriou said efforts have intensified at a political, diplomatic and inter-parliamentary level to exert effective pressure on Turkey.

She also said that the GC side welcomes the UN Security Council’s (UNSC) statements on Cyprus as recorded in its resolutions dealing with Varosha. She noted, however, that this is not enough and the goal remains the resumption of negotiations, in the framework of the good services of the UN Secretary General (UNSG) and the agreed-upon solution basis.

Demetriou added that a two-state solution cannot be accepted, noting that the GC side will continue to fight for a just and viable solution that will allow all Cypriots to live in peaceful conditions, without foreign armies and the outdated guarantee system.

Referring to the issue of missing persons, she said that it is undoubtedly the most tragic aspect of Cyprus issue, adding that the pain of relatives and their ordeal needs to come to an end and they need to know what happened to their loved ones. She said that the Republic of Cyprus supports the work of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) and called on Ankara to cooperate on the issue.

Defence Minister: Ankara’s aggression puts stability, security at risk

Alithia, Phileleftheros
Regional/International Relations

OVERVIEW

Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides said on Sunday that Ankara’s daily aggression jeopardises the stability and security of the wider Eastern Mediterranean region and undermines the interests of other countries in the region, the dailies report.

Speaking at a memorial service for the soldiers of the 286 infantry battalion who fell in 1974, Petrides said that Cyprus, through cooperation, bilateral and trilateral agreements, contributes together with neighbouring countries to create a network of security, peace, stability and cooperation.

He noted that it is obvious that Turkey, through its actions in the Cypriot EEZ, in the Karpasia peninsula and in Varosha is trying to create faits accomplis and to promote the permanent division of Cyprus.

Petrides added that in the face of Ankara’s illegal actions and unacceptable positions, the GC side strongly declares that it will continue to fight for a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the agreed framework.

The dailies report that on Tuesday, the Defence Ministry will provide an extensive briefing on the upgrading of Cyprus’ air defence with new armament programmes.
