Nicosia derby for UBP

UBP Nicosia MPs Faiz Sucuoğlu and Hasan Taçoy who were among the five candidates competing for the party’s leadership, advanced to the second round at the 11th extraordinary UBP congress. Sucuoğlu received 2706 votes and Taçoy 2102 during the UBP congress. UBP sources, speaking to Havadis, claimed that Taçoy who will have to close the 604-vote gap could withdraw from the race before a second round is held. Taçoy said he will decide on the second round after discussing it with close circles.

Diyalog

Priority will be the HP (Peoples’ Party)

Faiz Sucuoğlu who won the first round of the UBP leadership race spoke to Diyalog about which steps he will take should he become Prime Minister. Sucuoğlu said that he will first try to form a new coalition with HP, adding that his second option will be the Republican Turkish Party (CTP). He said he did not support the idea of early elections and could also look into the possibility of forming a coalition of technocrats. Sucuoğlu stressed his ultimate priority will be the 2021 state budget.

  • He warned the Greek Cypriots – The British High Commissioner Stephen Lille said that problems such as Maraş (Varosha) will continue if the Cyprus Problem remains unresolved.
  • Caught at Lokmacı – Basgil Karagöz was caught red-handed as he tried to cross from the south to the north illegally.
  • He was caught again a day later – Salih Yorgancı’s freedom, who was set free on bail after being arrested while violating border restrictions somewhere close to the İncirli (Makrasyka) area, did not last long.

Avrupa

Will he say two states?

The question being asked is whether or not Ersin Tatar will table the two-state solution instead of a federation during his social meeting with Nicos Anastasiades. Anastasiades is expecting the Turkish side to clarify its intentions… The UN Secretary-General will decide what he will do after the meeting, given Tatar’s different stance. It is not yet known whether the negotiations will resume from where the process left off in Crans-Montana. It is being claimed that Ankara wants to start from scratch.

  • Two accidents, two deaths in one day.
  • Taçoy feeling the mood – Hasan Taçoy, who made it to the second round with Faiz Sucuoğlu, will make his final decision tomorrow (Tuesday). Sucuoğlu received 2706 votes and Taçoy 2102 during the National Unity Party (UBP) congress.
  • One positive case of coronavirus in the north and 197 in the south.

OVERVIEW

Turkey on Sunday issued another navigational telex, or Navtex, to extend the seismic research activities of the Oruç Reis survey vessel until November 14.

According to an announcement on Sunday, two other vessels, the Ataman and Cengiz Khan will accompany Oruç Reis during its activities.

It will conduct various geological, geophysical, hydrographic and oceanographic surveys, especially of the continental shelf, while also searching for natural resources.

It was previously stated that Oruç Reis would remain in the area until November 4.

The Oruç Reis returned to the Turkish port of Antalya in mid-September after its time at sea ended – as determined in its latest Navtex declaration.

The vessel’s exploration work was initially scheduled to last until Sept. 1 but was extended until September 12, with the expectation of another extension later, continuing until September 25.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the decision to extend the seismic research activities of the Oruç Reis survey vessel until November 14, claiming that Turkey is violating Greece’s continental shelf.

“The decision to extend the Navtex is proof that Turkey continues to ignore the fundamental rules of international law,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry in response to the statement from Athens said that it was “an effort in vain” for Greece to object to Turkey’s seismic research activities.

Greece continues to object in vain to Turkey’s seismic research activities in the Eastern Mediterranean following the announcement of every navigational telex, or Navtex, issued by Ankara, the Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hami Aksoy said Sunday.

“Our country will continue its activities in the region within its rights based on international law,” Aksoy said in a statement and added that Ankara is ready to solve the dispute between the two sides.

Aksoy expressed Ankara’s determination to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots in the region.

“Greece should contribute to negotiations to ease increasing tensions between the neighbours instead of blaming Turkey with unfounded allegations and complaining to a third party in an attempt to escalate tension in the region,” he said.

“We once again invite Greece to an unconditional dialogue with our country to address both the Eastern Mediterranean maritime jurisdiction issue and other interrelated issues between the two countries,” Aksoy concluded.
