OVERVIEW

“The only feasible option is a two-state solution based on sovereign equality and collaboration with the Greek Cypriot side,” Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar said on Friday.

Tatar, speaking during a visit to the Turkish Cypriot Freedom Fighters’ Association, said that Ankara fully supported the idea of a two-state solution.

Tatar argued that the federal solution is nothing but the continuation of the Republic of Cyprus (RoC).

“The main goal behind this is to ensure the continuation of the unitary state while forcing the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island and putting an end to Turkey’s guarantees,” Tatar said.

He recalled that “despite that (Greek Cypriots) had even refused to accept rotational presidency for the Turkish Cypriots.”

Tatar also reminded of his predecessor’s words following Crans Montana, that it was the final attempt to reach a federation.

He noted that there is a fully functional state in the north, which would form the basis of a two-state solution.

He added that Turkey continues to support the development of the north’s economy and was planning to bring natural gas and electricity to the island through a cable and pipeline project.

Recalling the statements delivered by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on November 15, Tatar said: “clear messages given on Maraş (Varosha) and the Eastern Mediterranean region are very important.”

“This is a joint cause with Turkey, and we all have to work towards protecting the TRNC for the best interest of this cause,” Tatar concluded.
