Edorgan lashes out at EU over Cyprus

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed European Council President Charles Michel on Friday for advising him to avoid actions that would stir up tension in the Eastern Mediterranean and to refrain from any unilateral actions in Cyprus, the dailies report.

Erdogan said Turkey does not take orders from Michel and announced that Turkey will conduct new seismic surveys and drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean, mainly in Cyprus.

Erdogan said in talks with Michel, he was asked not to send harsh messages from Cyprus during his upcoming visit on July 20. Erdogan said he answered that “if that’s the case then you tell me what message I should give, and also give me the text from which I will read.” Erdogan said he will be accompanied by a big team in Cyprus.

“They [the EU] have not yet learned who is who. I am a child of this nation. When did you get the impression that Erdogan gives speeches under instructions?” he added.

Erdogan also said that Turkey will get the rights it is entitled to in the Eastern Mediterranean and mainly in the seas around Cyprus. He said that once Turkey begins exporting natural gas, the country will regain calmness.

Regarding Turkey’s unmanned combat aircraft, Erdogan said they will soon be taking to the skies and that they form part of Turkey’s increased attention to boosting the area of defence.

Alithia and Phileleftheros report that in statements on Friday, Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said the GC side is focused on preventing new faits accomplis in Varosha and on cultivating a situation which would allow for the resumption of Cyprus problem talks. The paper writes that Christodoulides said that President Nicos Anastasiades submitted his ideas to the UN, and recently discussed these with both the UN Secretary General (UNSG) and his Special Envoy Jane Holl Lute. These ideas, Christodoulides said, include specific details on the issue of a decentralised federation.

Commenting on the visit paid by Turkish Foreign Minister Melvut Cavusoglu to the north, Christodoulides said that what was once again witnessed was the obsession with a two-state solution.

Politis reports that political parties and the public in general are particularly disappointed and concerned about the course things have taken as regards Varosha, since no matter what the EU and the international community say, Ankara is not being deterred from moving forward with its plans. The paper writes that both Cavusoglu’s visit and Erdogan’s comments show that Turkey may be delaying or weighing its moves, but it is still moving in the same direction.

Politis reports that diplomatic sources believe that during his announcements regarding Varosha, Erdogan will attempt to muddy the waters by not saying anything that directly points to a violation of UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
