Cavusoglu: Turkey supports TC vision

Alithia, Haravgi, Phileleftheros
Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Turkish Foreign Minister Melvut Cavusoglu said Turkey supports the vision of TCs and has no hidden agenda, the dailies report.

Speaking to Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asia, Cavusoglu said the only rational way of achieving progress in the Cyprus problem is a two-state solution based on sovereign equality. Phileleftheros reports that his comments were likely a response to recent comments made by former TC leader Mustafa Akinci, who said Turkey’s true goal is to annex the north.

Upon being asked by the paper whether this is a possibility in the event that negotiations fail once again, given that neither the EU nor GCs accept a two-state solution, Cavusoglu said that Turkey has since the onset supported a fair, permanent and viable solution in Cyprus and has contributed towards this end along with TCs. Cavusoglu said Turkey is constructive, but also wants to see results, noting that negotiations so far have failed because GCs refuse to share the island’s power and wealth with TCs.

The only way to achieve results, he said, is to recognise the simple truth, whereby TCs are co-owners of the island and Cyprus is their homeland too. The GC side’s failure to recognise this, he said, is the reason why a partnership has not been brought about for over 50 years, and why the Republic of Cyprus of 1960 collapsed and the Annan Plan of 2004 was rejected. The same intransigence was showed at Crans-Montana in 2017, he said. It is for this reason, that the model of a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation (BBF) is neither applicable, nor viable for Cyprus, Cavusoglu said.

He added that in order for any negotiating process to resume, TCs must first see their sovereign equality and the equality of their international status recognised, so that the state of TCs does not remain uncertain if the process fails once again. Cavusoglu said a two-state solution would achieve viable peace, stability and cooperation in Cyprus and in the broader region.
