FM asks EU counterparts to boost pressure on Turkey

Alithia, Haravgi, Phileleftheros
Negotiations Process, EU Matters

OVERVIEW

Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides requested from his EU counterparts but also from the EU collectively that they boost their interventions towards Turkey so that its illegal actions in Varosha can be reversed and in view of returning to the negotiating table to discuss a UN-approved solution, the dailies report.

Addressing the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) meeting held in Slovenia, Christodoulides said that if these results are not achieved, then according to unanimous decision adopted on July 27, during the next Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), EU FMs will be called to examine specific reactions.

Christodoulides added that the course and future of EU-Turkey relations are wholly dependent on Ankara, and it is therefore important that in the time leading up to the FAC, the appropriate messages reach Ankara, especially since the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi will be visiting Turkey next week.

The papers report that the Gymnich focused almost entirely on Afghanistan and the EU’s choices for action in response. In his address, Christodoulides stressed that the future of Afghanistan and the support of the country’s entire population and particularly of women and children is of the utmost importance, adding that it is vital that the EU finds ways of direct communication with the regime under strict preconditions.

Phileleftheros reports that decisions taken at the Gymnich leave an open playing field for Turkey in Afghanistan, with Turkey then able to blackmail the EU for things in exchange related to the EU-Turkey positive agenda. The paper writes citing information that Christodoulides’ address there also touched on this development, whereby the EU appears to be willing to let Turkey fill the gap created by the US’ withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Haravgi reports that Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos said Nicosia has informed the UN of its wish to see a trilateral meeting held in New York involving the UN Secretary General (UNSG) and the two leaders. The paper however reports that chances of this are slim.
