Drought hits hard

The annual olive harvest is set to begin soon with the arrival of autumn but this year’s yield in the Mesarya (Mesaria) region is expected to be much lower than last year due to the drought. Those who spoke to the daily said that this year’s produce was close to nothing.

Havadis identified a modest list containing the basic nutritional needs of a household and looked into the retail prices of the items on that list. When the home-use bottled gas tanks and the rent are added, the picture of ‘poverty’ emerges. The minimum wage has become ₺4,324 (€432) but it is not enough even to cover the kitchen expenses. According to the research carried out by Havadis, the most modest shopping costs ₺750 (€75) monthly.

Return to 1960, a bridge towards a solution

Former Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Kasoulidis said welcomed the idea of returning to the 1960 constitutional order, stating that this was a proposal that could bring about a solution to the Cyprus Problem. He added that this proposal was made to get rid of the Turkish Cypriot side’s two-state position. Kasoulidis said that the return to the 1960 constitution could serve as a stepping stone for a bizonal federal structure.

OVERVIEW

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu met in New York ahead of the UN General Assembly week starts. Announcing the meeting on his Twitter account, Çavuşoğlu said they exchanged views ahead of the UNGA.

“Sovereign equality and equal international status are inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriot people,” Çavuşoğlu tweeted, adding that Turkey and North Cyprus will stand shoulder to shoulder.

Meanwhile, media outlets are reporting that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan departed on Sunday to attend and speak at the 76th assembly of the UN General Assembly.

Erdoğan said he will emphasize “Turkey’s strong support for multilateralism and the goal of establishing a fairer world order” in his address. He added that the issue of migration will dominate the high-level meetings in New York.


Turkey & north launch joint military drill amid mounting tensions in East Med

OVERVIEW

The final stage of a joint military exercise between Turkey and the north began on Monday. Turkish Cypriot media reported.

The drill – the Martyr Capt. Cengiz Topel Mediterranean Storm Exercise – was named after a Turkish Air Force pilot who was killed during the intercommunal conflict on the island in 1964 will be concluded on September 24.

The exercise will be held with air, naval and land elements from Turkey and the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’, a statement from the Turkish Cypriot Security Forces said. The joint military drill comes amid mounting tensions as the South and other actors prepare to resume hydrocarbon activities in the Eastern Mediterranean which had been put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier last week “The security priorities of our country and the TRNC along with efforts for a diplomatic solution in the Eastern Mediterranean are essential for us,” he said. “I wish success to our heroic soldiers who are the representatives of our determined will against those who try to box in Turkey in the Gulf of Antalya and ignore the existence of Cypriot Turks,” he added.
