Akar: Turkey will never allow research vessel to continue surveys

OVERVIEW

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said Turkey will never allow the research vessel Nautical Geo resume its operations off Cyprus and Crete, claiming these areas are under Turkish jurisdiction, the papers report.

Speaking at an event to mark the new academic year at the Turkish Naval Academy, Akar said Ankara was determined to not allow the violation of its rights.

“There are studies to conduct research in the east of Crete and in the southwest of Cyprus, violating our maritime jurisdiction,” Akar said. “We said we would never allow that,” he added. Akar also said the Turkish navy did what it had to do last week when it interrupted the vessel while carrying out surveys for the EastMed pipeline project. Haravgi reports Turkey’s actions have left the vessel stranded in the Larnaca port.

Akar also said Turkey is not a threat to anyone and that apart from protecting its own rights and laws, it does not seek to violate anyone else’s rights. “We respect everyone’s borders, rights, laws and sovereignty,” he said according to the papers.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, he said that GCs have been ignoring the Turkish presence on the island for many years. He said there cannot be any solution without the GCs acknowledging the Turkish presence, something that Turkey would not allow.

Akar also referred to Turkey’s position on a two-state solution on the island, noting that Turkey is seeking two sovereign, independent states with equal rights. He said this must be accepted, so that negotiations can begin on this basis and the two states can continue their lives.

Referring to Turkey’s relations with Greece, Akar said Turkey’s aim is to resolve problems by finding political solutions through dialogue, in the framework of international law and good neighbourly relations, Phileleftheros reports.

He said Greece and the GC side believe they can achieve something through some exercises and activities, with Phileleftheros noting that Akar was pointing to the agreement reached between Greece and France.

Meanwhile, the papers report that Turkey announced Friday that it plans to carry out seismic surveys in the eastern Mediterranean until December 16, 2021.  According to a navigational warning, Turkish research vessel Oruc Reis, accompanied by Ataman and Cengizhan, will be carrying out seismic surveys of the area between Antalya and Cyprus. Haravgi reports that the area reserved theoretically includes the Cypriot EEZ staring from five nautical miles off Paphos and towards the west. Politis reports that Turkey currently has three active Navtex warnings involving the area east of Cyprus.
