The economy is rising, the property market is also rising

Government interest subsidisation schemes did the trick. During the period between January-July 2021, 4,717 construction licenses were issued in comparison with 3,893 in the corresponding period of 2020, marking an increase of 21.2%. Increase to the tune of 29% recorded in property purchasing activity over the nine months of 2021 compared to the corresponding period of 2020. Good news for the future of the construction sector.

Anastasiades says refuses to recognise TC sovereign equality

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

President Nicos Anastasiades said on Sunday that despite pressure, the Turkish demand to recognise the occupied areas so Cyprus problem negotiations can resume cannot be met, Alithia reports.

Speaking at the anti-occupation rally organised by the municipality of Morphou, Anastasiades stressed that political equality cannot be used to create political inequality. He said that everyone should be aware that if the Turkish demands are accepted, Cyprus would become a protectorate of Turkey, adding that he will never accept such a thing.

The reason the talks in 2017 in Crans Montana failed, Anastasiades said, was because of the insistence by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglou that the occupying army would stay in place along with the anachronistic system of guarantees for 15 years, or 10 if we are well behaved, and with a date for revaluation at that. That is, Anastasiades continued, if the two parties did not agree, the guarantees would continue, as well as the permanent stay of the occupying army.

Regarding the issue of the appointment of a new special envoy or representative, Phileleftheros and Alithia report that Anastasiades continued accusing the UN Secretary General (UNSG), stating that at some point the truth must be revealed, because “hypocrisy benefits no one”, adding that hiding true events does not benefit international law.

Anastasiades also said that during the last trilateral meeting held with the UNSG and TC leader Ersin Tatar in New York last month it was agreed that a new special representative for Cyprus would be appointed. Phileleftheros and Alithia report that Anastasiades also said the UNSG had made it clear that the Turkish side’s pursuit of the appointment of a personal envoy could not be accepted, since Russia and China objected to such appointments on issues that the UN Security Council (UNSC) deals with. This is why, according to Anastasiades, he suggested the appointment of a special representative that would report back to the UNSC. He said the matter is still pending due to Turkey’s objections, despite Tatar’s initial agreement.

Alithia and Haravgi report that Anastasiades pointed out there was nothing the GC side has not done to meet the concerns of TCs. He stressed that the goal of his proposal for a return to the 1960 constitution was not the return to the unified state but the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus (RoC).

Referring to Turkey’s pursuit of unilaterally declaring an exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Anastasiades posed the question of which international law they are basing this move on, since Turkey has never accepted the law of the sea.  Anastasiades also referred to the issue of natural gas, noting that this was never posed a problem in negotiations, since it was considered agreed.

In a message read out at the same event Greek president Katerina Sakellaropoullou said that for Greece, the termination of Turkish occupation, the reunification of Cyprus and the definitive liberation from all occupation armies and the anachronistic system of guarantees constitutes and will constitute a long-term national pursuit and priority.

Mayor of Morphou Victor Hadjiavraam said that after 47 years no more refugees should have to die without being allowed home. He said they will not allow partition to take place and will fight for reunification of Cyprus and its people. Hadjiavraam also said that what is truly painful is the lack of prospects for the resolution of the Cyprus problem.

After the speeches, the people of Morphou marched to the Astromeritis checkpoint and handed a resolution to an UNFICYP representative.

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Turkey is once more undermining the stability of the East Mediterranean by violating the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus, head of the Foreign Affairs committee of the US Senate Bob Menendez said on Twitter, the papers report.

Referring to the Turkish Navtex issued for the Oruc Reis, Menendez called on the US to stand by the side of Cyprus. He also said the EU must fully support the vital interests of all its members.

Earlier, Menendez had a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides. The Ministry said the conversation focused on the latest illegal moves by Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean.
