AKEL issues fresh call to Anastasides to assess Cyprob proposal

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

AKEL leader Stefanos Stefanou issued a new call to President Nicos Anastasiades to abandon his negative stance and at least discuss AKEL’s Cyprus problem proposal submitted last December, Haravgi reports.

Stefanou said the proposal provides ways of implementing the UN Secretary General’s (UNSG) call to transform natural gas into a catalyst for a solution.

He added that the danger of definitive partition has never been as visible as it is now. Stefanou said Turkey is taking advantage of the drawn-out impasse and the lack of negotiations to create new partitionist faits accomplis, with Famagusta being the latest target.

In the face of this situation, Stefanou said there is only one option: To take specific initiatives to push things towards a breakage of the impasse and the resumption of talks from the point they left off.

He said AKEL is not only not feel settled with partition, rather it knows that partition creates huge risks for Cyprus and its people, and this is why we do not have right to remain indifferent or share empty rhetoric at a time when Turkey is promoting partition.

Stefanou added that we must leave behind us the illusion that there is still time, and that we can live safely as long as Turkey continues to occupy our land, that there are other solutions, beyond the one we have agreed upon with the international and TC community, that of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality.
