OVERVIEW

UNFICYP announced on Friday that President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar have reached an agreement to introduce 5G across the island, the dailies report.

According to the UNFICYP statement, the agreement was reached thanks to extensive work carried out by the Technical Committee on Broadcasting and Telecommunication over the past two years, the dailies report.

The dailies add that the agreement was concluded by GC chief negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis and the TC Special Representative, Ergün Olgun, with the facilitation of the UN Secretary General’s (UNSG) general advisor on Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar.

Under the EU-backed project, the island’s TV broadcasting systems will be removed from the 700 MHz frequency band, transitioning from analogue to digital broadcasting, allowing the allocation of the 700 MHz frequency band to 5G mobile services.

Phileleftheros reports that the lack of mobility in the Cyprus problem can be seen both by developments on the ground and through the two sides’ inability to reach agreements that foster a positive climate between them. The paper writes that the 5G agreement is the first reached between the two sides in a long time and was only reached after two years of discussions, which the paper argues is indicatively of the broader Cyprob situation at the moment.

The paper writes that the issue of 5G was one of the areas that the UN believed could be worked on in order to improve the climate between the two sides, with a broader focus being put on cooperation through technical committees. However, the paper adds, it is becoming clear that even on this level, there are many difficulties and obstacles before agreement can be reached.

Phileleftheros adds that this negative Cyprob climate is also why the UNSG is stalling the appointment of an envoy, even though the appointment itself would not be enough to push the Cyprob process forwards. The paper also writes that Nicosia has very little hope that the UN will announce any developments regarding the envoy before next month.
