They have not reached an agreement but they did not reach a dead-end either

Jane Holl Lute will now turn to the guarantor powers for the Terms of Reference. Yesterday’s meeting between Anastasiades-Akinci had a PR character. The prospect of a trilateral meeting remains (open).

Phileleftheros

To be continued in New York

Lute kept the effort alive despite her departure without the Terms of Reference. She wrapped up this round of contacts with a social meeting of the leaders.

The start of the new school year was an eventful one

The first day of school for the pupils of our country was marred by incidents of expulsion on the grounds of appearance such as stonewashed jeans, beards, hair highlights etc. The highlight was sending a pupil, a refugee from Syria, away because she was wearing a headscarf. In the meantime, there are scores of problems with school facilities.

We were left with hope

The snag in the Terms of Reference was not overcome and Lute is leaving empty-handed. Jane Holl Lute: Both leaders have pledged to continue the effort, we had serious and focused consultations. President: We do not give up hope, the procedure is ongoing. The ball regarding next decisions is now in the UN Secretary-General’s court.

  • All of a sudden… chaos over a headscarf – An unprecedented incident in Cyprus. A lyceum headmaster kicked out of school a Muslim pupil because she was wearing a headscarf. Education Minister: He ordered a probe against him, speaking of arbitrary policies that are not acceptable and that he will show zero tolerance to such behaviour.

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

The interruption of the latest round of contacts of UN envoy Jane Holl Lute after the two leaders failed to reach an agreement on the Terms of Reference (ToR) is the main item in most dailies on Saturday.

According to the papers, after six meetings with the leaders during the week, Lute announced at a reception held for them on Friday evening that she had serious discussions with both that had been quite focused.

“This is an effort that is ongoing, and both leaders have committed to continuing the process,” Lute said.

President Nicos Anastasiades told reporters on his return to the Presidential Palace that there was no disappointment. “We do not give up hope, it is an ongoing process,” he said.

He added that the next step would depend on Lute, who would also hold rounds of contacts with the guarantor powers.

Cyprus Mail reported Lute was expected to draft a report that will be handed over to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who will then be called to decide on the way the procedure would move forward.

In order to avoid the termination of the procedure for the terms of reference, Lute will also be presenting Guterres with two documents; one by the GCs the other by the TCs, the paper reported.

According to Politis, the positive aspect is that the UN have now a clear picture on the intentions of the two sides.

The informal joint meeting by the two leaders on Friday evening was aimed at showing that the two sides intend on continuing the effort for the ToR, the paper said.

Haravgi reported that it was a fixed match, arguing that the outcome was an expected one following leaks by government circles that the TC side was putting forth demands beyond the three points that had been agreed on during the two leaders’ August 9 meeting, while it had been made clear that things would lead to failure.

All the dailies also report that Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was expected to arrive in the occupied areas for contacts.

OVERVIEW

All dailies report that Archbishop Chrysostomos said he would seek information from the Secret Service (KYP) on the number of Russians living in Kyrenia and that he would ask the Russian Church tell President Vladimir Putin to have those people leave the north.

During statements to the press, the Archbishop, commenting on the existence of a Russian Orthodox church in the occupied areas, said he was informed by the Bishop of Kyrenia that there were only around 40 to 50 Russian-speaking people in Kyrenia and not thousands as it had been reported earlier in the month. In any case, he said he would call the chief of KYP on Monday to find out.

He also said that if there are Russians living in the north since before the invasion, the Church of Cyprus could make arrangements for their religious needs but if they arrived illegally on the island and live in houses that belong to GCs he would call on them to leave.

He added that he would issue a plea to the Russian Church to ask Putin to ask Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to call on those people living in the north illegally to leave.
