Unregistered and illegal Koran courses to be shut down
The Ministry of Education took action following Yenidüzen’s effective reporting. The Secondary Education Department is taking steps to shut down a guest house in Alsancak (Karavas) which is being used as a boarding school teaching the Koran. The head of the department Cengiz Uzun will be submitting a report to the ministry and the minister will have the final say.

National Unity Party (UBP) leader and Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, who refuses to allow the development masterplan to be published in the official gazette to be enforced, put forward by the People’s Party’s (HP) Interior Ministry, rejected the allegations that the coalition government has reached its end. Tatar said the said masterplan did not receive communal consensus.

Britons left homeless
The land, on which the “Greatstone 2” housing estate in Lapta (Lapithos) was built, along with the 13 homes located on the plot, was auctioned off on Sunday for ₺3,445.000 to Bülent Yüksekbaş. The homeowners protested the procedure outside the coffee shop where the auction was being held.

Everyone is curious to see what the reaction of the coalition partner HP, which is defending the plan, will be.

“We cannot be solely dependent on the freshwater supply from Turkey,” President Mustafa Akıncı said on Sunday following a visit made to the Geçitköy (Panarga) dam.
In a post on social media, Akıncı said the water flow from Turkey to the Geçitköy (Panarga) Dam will temporarily cease as a result of the problem in the pipeline.
He warned that the duration of the repairs could last longer than expected.
“Water is life however it is not right to plan our lives based on the water supplied from Turkey. It is no doubt an important project to supply the north with water but it is vital not to neglect our own resources,” Akıncı stressed.
He emphasised the importance of protecting the underground water resources on the island, utilizing the rainwater to feed underground reserves and to limit rainwater running down the rivers from flowing into the sea.
“It is vital to give due importance to water-saving measures,” Akıncı concluded.

Leader of the National Unity Party (UBP)-Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ersin Tatar said on Sunday that his party will be nominating its own candidate.
Speaking to online news portal HaberKıbrıs,he said the party will announce its decision on Saturday, January 18.
Commenting on rumours that he had received instructions from Ankara to step down and support independent candidate Kudret Özersay, Tatar said that these claims were aimed at knocking him out of the race.
“Such accusations are an insult on the UBP and me,” he said, expressing concern that this campaign against him could hurt relations with Turkey.
Demand for north’s potatoes from the south

“Greek Cypriot potato exporters have asked for 1300 tons of potatoes from the north,” Engin Halkseven, head of the association for potato growers in the north.
Speaking to Yenidüzen, Halkseven said the torrential rains hit the potato crop in the south, flooding fields and destroying 30 to 45 tons of potatoes.
He added that the export demand will be met depending on the harvest in the north.
Halkseven noted that Turkish Cypriot potato growers have also not been able to check their crops as the fields are too muddy to enter.
“We will decide on the export of potatoes by taking the needs of the domestic market into consideration and after examining the situation carefully,” Halkseven said.
Halkseven had told Yenidüzen earlier that there were 2500 tons of excess potatoes currently being kept in the cold-storage units.
