Workers in supermarkets and bakeries at high risk from coronavirus

OVERVIEW

Dailies highlight the concerns created by the fact that coronavirus cases have been found in supermarkets and bakeries, due to the fact that these are business that are very busy every day.

The government’s experts told journalists that these findings confirm their concerns of multiple small and big hotspots throughout Cyprus. Experts suggest wearing masks when going to supermarkets and stores or making their own if they don’t have medical masks.

On Friday, 31 new cases were detected after a total of 819 tests. Out of these, eight cases concern people that work as doctors and nurses in public and private hospitals. Dailies also report that three new cases were detected in the north on Friday.

Haravgi reports that one case of the coronavirus has been detected among the staff of UNFICYP. The peacekeeping force has announced that the affected person displayed mild symptoms and was diagnosed with having contracted the coronavirus. The patient is quarantined and their contacts are being tracked.

The government has also announced that it is starting testing about 20,000 persons working in high risk sectors, such as the public sector and local government, the National Guard, the police and the fire brigade, as well as employees in supermarkets, banks, gas stations, kiosks and bakeries.

According to the tally maintained by Phileleftheros, 694 cases of the coronavirus have been detected in Cyprus so far. The government controlled areas have had 595 cases and 15 deaths and the occupied areas have had 99 cases and 3 deaths.

Philleftheros also reports that benefits will be sent to the enclaved G/Cs living in Karpasia on Wednesday with the help of UNFICYP. Due to the decition by the “government” to put several Karpasia peninsula under quarantine, it is not possible to send the usual shipment of food. However, medicine and baby food will be transferred normally.


Government issues data on confirmed natural gas findings

The Energy Ministry has issued its 2019 report on the RoC’s hydrocarbon assets, registering the finds in the Glafkos and Aphrodite gas fields. The annual reporting of energy assets is an obligation of the government according to EU regulations, Phileleftheros reports.

According to the report that was published on Friday’s issue of the government gazzette according to Phileleftheros, Glafkos in parcel 10 of the EEZ contains 5 to 8 tcf (trillion cubic feet) of natural gas and Aphrodite in parcel 12 contains 4.45 tcf of natural gas.

According to the report, the data from exploratory drillings in parcel 6 is currently being analysed. There is not enough data for assessing the situation in other parcels, the report adds.
