“High” tolerance and cover-ups from everywhere

Probe Committee on Cypra: It got to work with testimonies-catapults from G. Perdikis and I. Charalambidou. The businesses of the husband and children of the accountant general enjoy a unique immunity from state services. As testified yesterday by Mr Perdikis, from 2003 until today, he reported the Cypra slaughterhouse for a series of illegal constructions and interventions, but nothing happened. A criminal investigation was conducted against the owner of the Cypra slaughterhouse for a false declaration in a public tender. The Agriculture ministry was informed but it did not deem it necessary to file a complaint with the attorney general. ‘Nothing wrong’ from the audit service too after a complaint in 2014 for favourable treatment of Cypra due to the accountant general. Criticism from Irene Charalambidou on the findings that have been ‘forgotten’ for three years that weigh against the accountant general Rea Georgiou, but also in view of the way the Veterinary Services dealt with the retention of €1 million from the slaughterhouse which constituted veterinary fees.

UN reportedly worried about renewed Cyprob impasse

Phileleftheros, Politis
Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Phileleftheros reports that Nicosia is not ruling out the possibility that the UN Secretary General (UNSG) might be having second thoughts over convening the informal five-party summit in fear of it leading to a new impasse, which would in turn force him to pull the brakes on peace efforts.

For this reason, the paper writes, it is not out of the question that the pandemic will be used as an excuse so that the summit can be pushed further back, with April already being thrown around in discussions.

Phileleftheros cites an interview with Alpha by the GC chief negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, who confirmed that discussions are now placing the summit in April, noting that the date has been continuously pushed back since initial plans to hold the informal meeting at the end of last year or beginning of the new year. Mavroyiannis clarified that the GC side is eager to see the summit take place as soon as possible and is not pleased with the constant postponements.

Phileleftheros also notes that Mavroyiannis confirmed what the paper has been reporting recently regarding Turkish manoeuvres in view of pushing the informal summit back so that it coincides with the EU Summit in March. The paper quotes Mavroyiannis saying: “Neither the date nor the location of the informal meeting has been decided, mainly the UN is telling us that this is due to the difficulties of the pandemic, but we’re discerning that there is also some Turkish scheming.” Mavroyiannis noted that the decisions that may be taken at the EU Summit regarding Turkey may in turn affect the informal summit on the Cyprus Problem.

Mavroyiannis added, according to Phileleftheros, that the GC side will remain firmly in favour of a bizonal bicommunal federation as the basis for solution negotiations, highlighting that this is also the framework of the UNSG’s mandate from the UN Security Council (UNSC).

Politis reports that during that interview Mavroyiannis referred to President Anastasiades’ proposal for a decentralised federation. Mavroyiannis clarified that a decentralisation of competences will not in any way affect the broader structure of the state as a single and indivisible state with a single nationality and international status, as well as EU and UN membership.

Landfill in north causing Strovilia rodent problem

Politis
Internal Security

OVERVIEW

Politis reports on the complaints filed by the mayor of Deryneia Andros Karayiannis regarding the renewed rodent problem being faced by Strovilia, which is believed to be caused by a nearby illegal landfill in north Famagusta.

Karayiannis sent a letter on the matter to the Interior Minister Nicos Nouris in which he requests his intervention in resolving the matter.

Politis reports that Karayiannis said that in the past he had also referred the matter to the British Bases, which resulted in a temporary halt in the dumping of garbage at the illegal landfill. But over the past few days Karayiannis said he has noticed that garbage is being dumped there anew, with Strovilia’s rodent problem resurfacing. The rodents are coming in from the north through the Buffer Zone, Karayiannis said.
