Dendias: Turkish, TC Cyprob stance leaves little room for optimism

Negotiations Process

OVERVIEW

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that Turkey’s and the TC side’s stance on the Cyprus issue leaves little room for optimism, the dailies report.

In an interview with the Greek newspaper Realnews, Dendias noted that there might be a calm summer regarding the Greek-Turkish relations, but he cannot predict that the same will happen in the Cyprus problem. “I hope that we will have a relatively calm summer in the Aegean, without new challenges. This was the conclusion that emerged from the Prime Minister`s recent meeting with the Turkish President. Unfortunately, as far as Cyprus is concerned and in view of the anniversary of the invasion on 20 July, I could not say the same. We have to be on constant alert,” Dendias said.

Dendias stressed that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has made clear that Greece rejects any proposal that does not fall within the framework of the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, namely a bicommunal, bizonal federation (BBF). This position is shared by all UN states, with the exception of Turkey, he said.

Commenting on the recent letter sent by Turkey to the UN, Dendias noted that with this letter Turkey “reiterates its unilateral claims against our country, which we reject in their entirety. We will respond appropriately as usual”.

As he noted, the recent meeting between the Mitsotakis and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as his contacts with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu have allowed “to break the ice” to a certain degree, but “no significant progress has been made in the two countries’ relations”.

The positions of Greece and Turkey remain diametrically opposed, Dendias said. “Our difference was and still is that Turkey refuses to respect the basic principles of international law, the law of the sea, good neighbouring relations and to withdraw the threat of war against Greece. We have no illusions,” Dendias concluded.

Meanwhile, Phileleftheros and Haravgi report that the UNSC will be meeting to discuss the renewal of the UNFICYP mandate on July 29, with the UN Secretary General (UNSG) to submit his reports on both UNFICYP and his good offices mission on July 9. Citing the schedule of the French Presidency, on July 15 a briefing of countries participating in the peacekeeping mission will be conducted, while on July 21 UNSC members will be briefed by the UNSG’s Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar before deliberations for the decision begin.

Considering this, Phileleftheros reports that Spehar is set to meet with President Nicos Anastasiades on Monday morning for a final discussion before the UNSG submits his reports to the UNSC. Nicosia hopes that through the meeting its concerns regarding Turkish provocations in Famagusta will be taken into consideration in the reports, the paper repots.

Phileleftheros and Haravgi also report on statements issued by the head of the President’s Press Office, Andreas Iosif, at the funeral of the until recently missing person Panayiotis Karantonas. Iosif said Nicosia is continuing to send messages in every direction in an attempt to highlight the negative consequences of Turkey’s actions on the UNSG’s efforts. Iosif said that Turkey’s arrogant behaviour has undermined the UNSG’s efforts to such an extent that for these efforts to continue, the de-escalation of Turkish provocations and the abandonment of plans to create new faits accomplis in Varosha have been set as conditions.

Characterising the Turkish side’s demand for international recognition of its sovereign equality and of a two-state solution as unacceptable, Iosif said Nicosia’s support remain unchanged for the immediate resumption of negotiations with the aim of securing a BBF solution with political equality according to UN resolutions and EU principles and values. Iosif also said that a Cyprob solution should first and foremost be to the benefit of the Cypriot people and respect their human rights through self-respect, while it should also be without the anachronistic guarantees system and without the presence of foreign troops.
